whats the deal .....

Being from the south I really do not get the concept of the whole Michigan vs Ohio State match up. As its not a state rivalry game like Florida vs Florida State. So please tell me whats the deal behind this match up? Their was an HBO spacial about it but I did not get to see it.

First, OSU and Michigan are two great football programs with tons of tradition and fans

Also:

During 1835 and 1836, the State of Ohio and the Michigan Territory engaged in a brief and bloodless border dispute known as the Toledo War. Some have proposed that the football rivalry is a modern manifestation of this historical tension

I don't get why they call the Toledo War the basis. If anything, that would make more sense if it were a UT VS UM rivalry.

The schools just formed a hatred for each other, and the rivalry really got going during the 10 year war between Bo and Woody.

The University of Ohio gave the buckeyes a good game this past season if I remember right, but I do get your point. Does OSU hate MSU as much as UM or no?

No, we don't hate MSU as much as we hate Michigan. The only team that OSU realllllly hates is Michigan. Though the Big 10 started to institute a rivalry between us and PSU. Nothing equals an OSU/Michigan game!

Woody Hayes was fired in 1978 after having a temper tantrum during the Gator Bowl against Clemson and striking a Clemson linebacker named Charlie Bauman after intercepting a pass to clinch the game for the Tigers as well as two of his own players. Ohio State was embarrassed, and they had no choice but to immediately fire Woody Hayes. The man who was so famous for his temper would lose his job because of it.

Well, to you an FSU/Florida game is the best. OSU/Michigan is the best rivalry in college football.

See, people differ on what the best CFB rivalry is by the region they live in.

When was the last good FSU/Florida game?

They're rivalries, do you really need to argue about them?

If so, Tulsa vs Rice is the best.

You can't say one rivalry is the best. Since I am OSU biased, I will say OSU - UM is the best.

If you read this, put a yawning smily in your next post.

No, no one here really likes OU around here.

whats the deal .....

I think this is a matter of perspective.

RJINTAMPA is passionate about the Florida-Florida State rivalry because he's an Seminoles fan.  I'm sure this rivalry is bigger to him than any other rivalry.

I am passionate about the Clemson-South Carolina rivalry because I'm a Tigers fan.  I can tell you this is more important to me than any other rivalry out there.

I agree with Admin that the reason the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry get a lot of press is because BOTH programs have been consistently good for a very long time.

It's not just one program being better than the other like the Clemson consistently beating South Carolina.

The UM-OSU rivalry has been a big rivalry (57-42-6 in Michigan's favor) long before UF-FSU (32-19-2 in Florida's favor) became the heated rivalry that we know it today.

They are in the MAC, so no. The only BIG college football games in Ohio are OSU games

I'd have to say Ohio State games are even bigger than the pro games in the state of Ohio.

Yep. Evidence of that is the almost 100,000 fans who showed up for the Spring Game!

Frankly no pro teams in Ohio are very good, except for the Cavaliers.

I don't think even a professional team like the Cleveland Cavaliers draw as much as Ohio State football (or even Ohio State athletics, in general).

Ohio State football is HUGE! It's a must to go to a game in the Shoe if you are in Columbus.

Ohio State basketball is big too, but other than football and basketball, no one cares about other OSU sports
