Free agent pitcher Freddy Garcia signed a one-year minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers on August 12, 2008. The Tigers were in third place in the American League Central at the time of the signing, and are hoping that if Garcia were to return in 2008, he would add a needed boost to the Tigers' rotation and playoff run. Garcia is recovering from a torn labrum and has not pitched in the majors since June of 2007. On August 5, 2008, he auditioned for several teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers, Arizona Diamondbacks, Detroit Tigers, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Minnesota Twins, Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago White Sox. At the audition, his velocity was clocked at the mid- to upper-80's. He later signed a one-year minor league deal with the Tigers. Garcia's agent believed that he would be ready to join the team by September of 2008.
